What is a patent examiner?

A “patent examiner” is the person to whom the U.S. Patent Office entrusts the task of reviewing your patent application. In doing so, the patent examiner searches to see if anyone else has invented the same thing or something similar. The conversation that follows, in which one tries to convince the examiner to grant a patent, is called “patent prosecution.”
